The Effects of Perspective-Oriented Social Skills Training on Function and Symptom for Persons with Schizophrenia

Abstract
Purpose: This study investigated the effects of perspective-oriented social skills training programs on the levels of functioning and symptoms for patients with schizophrenia.

Methods: A total of 28 subjects participated in this study and they were recruited from one psychosocial rehabilitation center located in D-city. The experimental group consisted of 14 subjects and they received perspective-oriented social skills training services once every week for 23 weeks. The remaining 14 subjects were assigned to the comparison group and they received standard services except perspective-oriented social skills training program.

Results: In terms of functioning level change, the analysis revealed that the experimental group¡¯s outcome significantly improved compared to the comparison group in the areas of functioning total score, daily living skill dimension, and social relationship skill dimension. In terms of functioning level change, the simple main effect analysis indicated that the experimental group¡¯s outcomes of symptom total score and depression & anxiety dimension significantly improved over time compared to the comparison group.

Conclusion: The overall study results indicated that perspective-oriented social skills training had positive impact on the patients with schizophrenia in terms of increasing their functioning level and reducing symptom level.
